ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AA) – Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki traveled to Saudi Arabia on Sunday for a two-day visit, in which he will be meeting King Salman on security talks, Eritrean diplomatic sources told Anadolu Agency.

This marks the second time the isolated Eritrean president will visit Saudi Arabia this year after joining the Saudi-led coalition against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Currently, Eritrea allows Saudi and UAE warships to dock at Assab port from which to attack Yemeni rebels.

Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia only in 1991 after three decades of war.

Saudi Arabia is known to be supporter of the secessionist struggle of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front led by Isaias Afewerki who has been at the helm ever since the horn of Africa nation emerged as an independent country.

Eritrea is affected by economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council for its role in arming extremist elements and destabilizing the Horn of Africa.
