279 prisoners freed in Malawi

As Christians all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25, 279 in mates from the country’s 31 prisons are in a double celebration.



The country’s president, Joyce Banda has directed that 279 prisoners be pardoned as part of the Christmas celebration.

“The ministry of home affairs wishes to announce that it has pleased her Excellency the president Mrs. Joyce Banda to direct that 279 prisoners be pardoned,” the home affairs ministry has announced.

According to the home affairs ministry, under which the prisons fall under, those who have been pardoned have served at least half of their prison sentences with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences.

Malawi with a population of about 14 million has 12, 000 in mates congested in the 31 prisons.

Banda who became Malawi’s president on April 7 this year after the sudden death of professor Bingu wa Mutharika, also pardoned 377 prisoners during the Independence celebrations on July 6.

Pardoning prisoners during celebrations has become a custom since the days of the first Malawi leader, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
