Blantyre, Malawi, Nov. 20 (Raphael Tenthani/News Time Africa) _ A 22-year-old man has been seriously injured when a house fell on him during a heavy rain-storm that has also destroyed over 100 houses in the central lakeshore district of Salima, a senior district official has said..
“We had heavy rains that were accompanied by heavy winds,” said Salima District Director of Administration Redgson Mkolombwe Tuesday. “It was really bad; at least six villages in the area of Traditional Authority Kambwiri have been affected.”
Mkolombwe said officers from the district administration have been deployed to the affected area to tabulate the extent of the damage.
“We do not have the real figure at the moment but the preliminary figures show that over 100 houses have been destroyed but we expect the figure to rise,” he said.
He said apart from the injured man there has been no loss of life. ”The injured young man is in hospital but I think we will survive,” said Mkolombwe.
The rain-storm has mainly affected mud-and-thatch houses. Rains are beginning to fall in most parts of Malawi whose agro-economy is mainly anchored by rain-fed agriculture. Over 90 per cent of those involved in agriculture are subsistence farmers.(rt)
