Chiluba: NOT GUILTY
Frederick Chiluba was accused of embezzling over half a million dollars during his presidency over a period of ten years. But a Zambian judge has ruled that the funds could not be traced to Zambian government money. The former President was known for his lavish lifestyle. With big spending on designer suits and 2-inch heel shoes, he became the envy of most African leaders as he was always well dressed for ‘the occasion’
Chiluba’s successor, Levy Mwanwasa was handpicked by him but on assuming office, Mwarnawasa stripped him of immunity and instituted charges against him for corruption. But after a 6-year hearing, the Judge in the case Jones Chinyama said he was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the prosecution had failed to prove that Chiluba stole any government funds. Chuluba was president of Zambia from 1991-2001 and had always argued that charges against him were merely a political witch hunt designed by Britain.
