Algeria-Sudan Strengthen Bilateral Ties
Algeria becomes the latest country in Africa to express its firm support in efforts to cement peace and stability in Sudan. Nigeria, Ethiopia, and South Africa among others have been in the forefront in calling for dialogue and negotiations in the ongoing Darfur crisis. On Sunday, Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir received a message from his Algerian counterpart Abdel-Aziz Boutafliqa on efforts to strengthen bilateral relations among the two countries.
In the same vein, Ali Ahmad Karti, Sudan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs said that Sudan welcomes every move by Algeria towards Sudan in regional and international arena. The two countries are currently working mutually towards an economic, sports and cultural cooperation initiative launch. Algeria has been invited to Sudan for the country’s Independence Day on December 31. Senior government officials, artists, intellectuals and dignitaries from Algeria are expected to grace the occasion. The United Nations has pledged US$91 million as support for the upcoming general elections in April 5-12, 2010 at the end of transitional period.
