Super Tanker Captured By Somali Pirates
A tanker en-route to the United States with a cargo of oil has been seized by Somali pirates. The tanker which is Greek-owned, was a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Somalia when it was captured. The tanker which weighs 300,000 tonnes and said to be one of the largest yet seized by Somali pirates had 28 crew members on board. It is reported that nine armed pirates attacked the as it left the Seychelles.
The ship was on its way to New Orleans in the US from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia but was now heading towards Somalia. According to confirmed reports, there are 16 Filipinos, nine Greeks, two Ukrainians and one Romanian crew members on board. This daring attempts by the pirates shows their total disregard of international laws and the ineffective so-called deterrents of NATO naval forces in the region.
