Over 200 prisoners in Malawi have walked to freedom after their President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika pardoned them as part of Christmas and New Year celebrations, the country’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has said.
“The prisoners pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences and some are critically ill prisoners.
‚ÄúThe Pardon of the 230 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness during the Christmas and New Year Celebrations,‚ÄĚ reads in part a statement from the Ministry.
The last time prisoners were pardoned was during the country’s Independence Days Celebrations on July 6.
The Malawi leader might also pardon some more prisoners in march during the Easter festive.
