DAKAR (AA) – A Senegalese court on Monday sentenced the son of former Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade to six years in prison for “amassing an illegal fortune.”
Karim Wade was also fined $270 million after Henri Gregoire Diop, chief judge at the Court of Illicit Enrichment in capital Dakar, found him guilty of illegally amassing $200 million during his tenure as a government minister from 2009 to 2012.
Wade’s lawyers, for their part, decried the trial as “politically motivated.”
Wade was appointed Infrastructure, International Cooperation and Air Transport Minister during his father’s stint as president. He was jailed in April of 2013 a year after his father lost 2012 presidential polls.
The younger Wade is accused of amassing an illicit fortune amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.
He also owns eight luxury cars, two homes, and a number of aviation companies, along with property in both Monaco and Singapore.
