Missing albino child found dead in Tanzania

ARUSHA (AA) – A one-year-old Albino child, who went missing this weekend, was found dead in north-western Tanzania on Wednesday.

“The body of Yohana Bahati was found in a farm some kilometers away from his home [in Geita region],” police Commander, Joseph Konyo told The Anadolu Agency by phone.

He said the child’s baby was hacked off.

“The police got reliable information about a cloth with blood particles in the farm,” Konyo said. “When we got there, we found the body.”

He said that investigation was continuing on the incident.

The police official appealed to the public to provide any information that might lead to the arrest of those behind the killing.

The child was kidnapped on Sunday and his mother was seriously injured after being attacked by a machete.

Konyo said that the child’s mother was hospitalized and underwent a head surgery.

Two people have been detained in connection with the killing.

Albino killings in Tanzania are associated with witchcraft, as albino body parts are believed in some circles to have magical properties.

The latest murder brings to 74 the number of Albinos killed in Tanzania since 2000.

A 4-year-old Albino child is still missing after being abducted in north-western Tanzania in December.

Last year, the Tanzanian government imposed a ban on witchdoctors in the country in an attempt to reduce albino killings.
