BEIRUT (AA) – At least eight Lebanese army troops were killed early Sunday in clashes with gunmen from Syria in the border town of Arsal, the military said.
In a statement, the army said that its units continued a military operation overnight against armed groups which raided Arsal a day earlier.
The clashes, the release said, left eight troops dead and several others injured.
The announcement came after gunmen said to be rebels from Syria attacked security army sites in Arsal and abducted a number of citizens and troops in retaliation for the arrest of a rebel leader affiliated with an extremist group fighting in Syria.
A Lebanese military official told Anadolu Agency earlier that the army arrested Abu Ahmed Jomaa, a senior leader of a Syrian “terrorist” group near the town, which is home to thousands of Syrian refugees who fled the war in their homeland.
