History repeats itself in Malawi’s cabinet appointment

Professor Peter Mutharika has appointed Goodall Gondwe as Finance and Economic Planning and Development Minister becoming the first person to be appointed in his much touted lean cabinet.

When Joyce Banda took over government in 2012 following the death of Bingu wa Mutharika she first made one cabinet appointment and Moses Kunkuyu was the lucky person. He was given the Information and Civic Education portfolio. The other ministerial appointments followed.

This is likely what is going to happen and people are anticipating that before the next working day the President will have announced his much touted 20-man cabinet.

The 77 year old Gondwe is returning to cabinet after resigning from his last portfolio as Economic Planning and Development Minister in the Joyce Banda led administration after he was arrested and charged with treason.

A former International Monetary Fund official, Gondwe was also in the first cabinet of the late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika and headed the same Finance portfolio.

A respected international economist, the former Mzimba parliamentarian, worked for the Africa Division for the International Monetary Fund before returning to Malawi to join politics, but also served as Chief Economic Advisor to former Malawi leader Dr. Bakili Muluzi before his 2004 cabinet portfolio.
