People of goodwill who can reveal the identity of the person who authored a letter that suggested that Dr Joyce Banda has abandoned the Presidency due to poor health, will cart home a cool K 2million, courtesy of the Malawi President, Newtime Africa can report.
Speaking over the weekend on return from Equatorial Guinea where she attended an Africa-American Summit, the President challenged that she has neither resigned nor is she sick, and swayed the prize money to anyone, whether a law enforcer or an ordinary citizen.
Addressed to the Speaker of the National Assembly the letter indicates that Dr. Joyce Banda is resigning because she is no longer able to fulfil her executive duties due to health problems, and has been rife on the social media in the week.
But the Malawi leader argued: “In the first place I must say that I have not resigned and I will not. I am a servant of the people and it is God who employed me.
She added: “What is happening are the signs that someone is desperate or panicking, but it is God who employed me in 2009 and I will be removed by Malawians and not somebody who is desperate or panicking somewhere.”
Dissociating the letter from the Presidency, the State House says at no time has Dr. Joyce Banda explicitly or implicitly resigned as Malawi’s Head of State, labelling the resignation letter fake, forged and disheartening.
Said presidential press officer Tusekele Mwanyongo Friday: “The State House is deeply dismayed by a fake and forged ‘Resignation Letter’ purportedly authored by Her Excellency the State President Dr. Joyce Banda allegedly advising the Honourable Speaker of Malawi National Assembly that she is no longer able to execute her executive duties due to alleged health problems”.
In a statement signed by the presidential press officer, the State House explains that at no time has Dr. Joyce Banda resigned as Malawi’s Head of State, and it is believed that the alleged resignation letter is the work of desperate confusionist bent on bringing disorder.
“The architects of the letter are people who cannot appreciate the peace and order currently prevailing in this country under the able leadership of Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda.
“They are prepared to stoop so low as to break the law just to bring about anarchy for their own selfish ends,” reads the statement in part, and warns that the Malawi Government will not just sit back watching some misguided individuals cross legal boundaries to further their sinister motives.
“It is of the strong view that this is a criminal act, which borders on treason, particularly when the architects of the letter had to forge the signature of the Head of the State,” the press officer said, adding that the government through appropriate law enforcing agencies will carry out necessary investigations to establish the source of the letter
President Joyce Banda ascended to the throne in April last year after a sudden death of professor Bingu wa Mutharika, whose policies in the years 2011 and 2012 were not in favour with both the local and the international community
