Malawi Journalist Justice Mponda freed on bail as Newstime Africa calls for his release

The Lilongwe Magistrate Court Tuesday October 16 2012 granted bail to Journalist Justice Mponda, who the police have charged with publishing false news likely to cause fear and alarm among people offense, contrary to earlier assertions by police publicists. When Mponda, 27 was picked Monday October 15 2012 at his residence in Blantyre, the police said he will be charged with three counts; publishing stories that are deemed false, insulting the state president, and criminal libel in nature, which they have not.

In his determination, Magistrate Benjamin Chulu said that he was giving the accused the bail on condition that he pays a cash bond of K 10,000 and has two sureties with a non cash bond of K 50,000 each.

Mponda was also ordered to be availing himself to Blantyre police every Monday to renew his bail bond until the case goes back in court November 15.

The accused scribes for Malawi Voice, an online publication and is being represented by lawyer, Chancy Gondwe.
