Unima beckons President Banda to be conferred Chancellor in two weeks

Exactly two months two days after the Mzuzu University (Mzuni), Malawi’s  second public university, bestowed President Joyce Banda as Chancellor of the Mzuzu University (Mzuni), President Joyce Banda will in two weeks time be inducted as a chancellor of the University of Malawi (Unima). “The State President, Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, shall in accordance with the University of Malawi Act be inaugurated as Chancellor of the University of Malawi,” the university registrar Tarsizius Nampota, has disclosed.

The function will be held in Blantyre at the College of Medicine Sports Complex ground on October 26 at College of Medicine in Blantyre, and thereafter the chancellor will preside over the congregation of the 2010/2011 academic year where the graduates will be c offered with bachelors, masters and doctorates degrees and university certificates.

Mzuni conferred president Banda chancellor of the university on August 24 this year ahead of the university’s 14th congregation. Banda becomes the first female chancellor but the fourth for Unima, after late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda (MCP), Dr. Bakili Muluzi (UDF) and the late Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika (DPP). Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda became the president of Malawi following constitutional order after the death of professor Bingu wa Mutharika on April 5 this year.

By virtue of being president of the republic of Malawi, Mrs. Joyce Banda is required to be chancellor of the public universities-Unima, Mzuni, and Luanar. This will be Banda’s second assignment in the country’s universities after the Mzuni function. Unima is Malawi’s oldest public university.
