Blantyre, Malawi, Oct. 12 (Newstime Africa) – In a classic case of the hunter being hunted, police in the capital, Lilongwe, Friday arrested Malawi’s Ombudsman Tujirane Chizumira. ”Yes, we have arrested Justice Chizumira over one count of abuse of office and another of theft by public servant,” police deputy national spokesman Kelvin Maigwa told PANA Friday.
Chizumira, Malawi’s de facto public protector, has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. Workers at her office downed tools accusing her of nepotism. She also spurned summons to appear before Parliament to answer the workers’ concerns.
As we went to press, Justice Chizumira was still being interrogated by fiscal police at the National Police headquarters popularly known as Area 30.
