The Ugandan government has increased security measures on all entry ports into the country following threats by Islamist rebel group and Al-Qaeda proxy, Al-Shabaab who are based in Somalia. The rebel group had threatened to attack the capitals of Uganda and Burundi after they alleged that these two countries had soldiers serving with the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia and were responsible for shelling their base recently.

The Ugandan government has put in place security measures that will see Somali visitors and refugees arriving in Uganda being registered and screened. This move will affect the thousands of illegal Somali immigrants who currently live in Uganda who now fear an inevitable clampdown by authorities. But Somali community leaders in Kampala, the Ugandan capital have vowed to help the government by reporting any movement of al-shabaab in the country. They said they will root out all insurgents found in their midst. The rebel group had also threatened to attack Kenya; accusing the East African country of recruiting troops to fight for the Somali government.
