The Ethiopian government has announced that the country’s Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi has died from an unspecified illness. It was revealed by the government spokesman that Zenawi has been ill for sometime but reluctant to seek treatment during the early stages of the illness. Elections which were scheduled for 2015 will go ahead but no polls will be held before that, and the current Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn will assume the leadership of the country with immediate effect.
Zenawi who has been ill for some time, died out of the country and government officials have confirmed that his body will be brought to Ethiopia for burial. Zenawi had not been seen in public for the past two months and during a recent press conference, officials had stated he was recovering from treatment, but the details were shielded from the public. Ethiopia remains a fragile state despite Zenawi positioning the country for unprecedented political and economic stability.
