Delta Region to Receive 10% of Nigeria’s Oil Revenue

Rebels in the Delta Region
Authorities in Nigeria have announced that 10% of the country’s oil revenue is to be given to the people of the Niger Delta, an area that has been afflicted by insurgencies for some time now. The move is an attempt by the Federal Government to stop militants from attacking oil installations in the delta region. According to reports, the government is saying that the money would go directly to communities, instead of state governors; to avoid any embezzlement by local authorities.
The rebels who are at the heart of the insurgencies appear to have welcomed the news as they have been fighting all this time for a fair share of the oil wealth generated from the region, for the people of the Delta area. The rebels who frequently resort to and kidnappings and killings as a means of funding their activities, have recently signed up to an amnesty granted by the government to hand over their weapons. The Delta region stands to benefit from the 50bn Naira that will be diverted to communities this year.
