Condoms Banned in Kenya

Compulsory tests on condoms

The Kenyan authorities have banned a particular brand of condoms in the country after tests in Zambia showed they leak. The ‘Hot’ brand condoms, manufactured in the UK were banned after tests revealed their weakness. The government took the immediate decision because it feared stories about condoms that leak, could damage its fight against AIDS.

The Kenyan government gives away 160 million condoms every year to its people to reduce the high risk of HIV infections in the country. People who have been using condoms are left with the fear of the risk of infection and are critical of the government. But authorities are assuring the public that 95% of the condoms on sale in the country meet the standards set by the UN. But despite these assurances, the head of the country’s HIV/AIDS control programme, said he will be conducting a comprehensive study to determine how the issue has affected the people’s confidence in condoms.
