Blantyre – Malawi president Bingu wa Mutharika on Friday appointed new Commander of the country’s Malawi Defence Force. The development comes after Mutharika fired former military chief General Marko Chiziko. In a statement released by Chief Secretary to the Office of President and Cabinet which was read on the state television station, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation , Friday night Chiziko has been replaced with Brigadier General Henry Odilo. According to the statement Brigadier General Odilo, who was Malawi’s military attaché at the High Commission in London had automatically ascended to the rank of the General.
The appointment of the new army commander comes after Mutharika had accused organisers of the Wednesday’s anti-government demonstrations and some opposition leaders of plotting to overthrow his government. He had warned them of dire consequences.
