In what has been described as the biggest joke to come out of West Africa recently, President Yahya Jammeh of the tiny republic of Gambia says he wants the Libyan ambassador loyal to Moammar Gadhafi to leave and that his country is declaring its support for the Benghazi-based rebel council. It is quite interesting that a dictator known for suppressing all forms of human rights in his country and oppressing his people, is attempting to showcase intolerance for the same crimes he has repeatedly perpetrated on his own people. It seems Jammeh’s form of democracy could not be found in any political school of thought. It exists only in the mental framework of this mad man who has been accused of killing anyone that attempts to criticize or come in the way of his authoritarian rule.
A government statement made on Friday gave the Libyan ambassador and embassy staff 72 hours to leave Gambia. The government also says it’s freezing or closing all assets held in Gambia by Gadhafi’s government. Those include two five-star hotels and an amusement park, and represent a large investment in the West African nation that is surrounded by Senegal. Gambia says its decision was prompted by “the heinous atrocities that are being carried out by the Gadhafi regime against innocent citizens.” But one may be tempted to laugh, as Jammeh’s crimes against his own people are not far from being heinous, and atrocities continue in the Gambia as he solidifies his position as president for life! In fact rumours have it that we are soon to see the first West African monarchy installed in the Gambia for nearly a century, having Jammeh as KING! Interestingly, the Libyan embassy in Banjul has declined to comment.
