The Development of Kailahun Becomes a Priority for President Ernest Koroma of Sierra Leone

Dr Ernest Bai Koroma - Kailahun is a Priority

It is becoming more obvious that the President of Sierra Leone is determined to make one of his important priorities, the development of the provincial areas of his country. Previous governments have never paid real attention to the run down infrastructural environment of Sierra Leone’s provincial cities. But in keeping with his party’s manifestos the President has taken upon himself to oversee development projects taking place across the country. The government of Sierra Leone has embarked on a massive road development project to the tune of 110 Million dollars that will see the construction of a major road network that will link major cities in the Eastern part of the country. The Kenema/Pendembu road will enhance trade and provide easy access for business and community movement in the region.

In a recently concluded visit to the Eastern Province of the country, the President urged all Paramount Chiefs to work in the interest of the country’s progress. It seems the president is fully aware of traditional problems that have hindered development in some areas of the country. As a man of peace, the Sierra Leone Head of State has called on traditional leaders to work together to promote peace, security and development in the regions and put aside their differences in the interest of national unity. The President who enjoys the overwhelming support of all paramount Chiefs in the province expressed his government’s desire to allow Chiefs to do their work with less interference from government and assured them of his government’s continued support in all areas of economic, social and cultural advancement.

By traveling by road himself to the region, the president aims to highlight the poor conditions of the roads and to express his solidarity with the people  and also show his government’s commitment to help revitalize the economy of the area by building better road networks. As a result of his government’s intervention, the Kailahun Court Barray is fully functional and up and running. The Court Barray which has been abandoned has seen a cash injection from the government which led to its complete reconstruction. The President is keen on promoting regional peace and reconciliation in trying to end long-standing disputes between traditional leaders in some of the country’s vital regions.

The people of Kailahun expressed deep appreciation of the President’s visit and hailed him as a man of peace, and said that they were highly impressed with the Head of State’s interest in the development of their Province. For them this is the first time a sitting Head of State has taken particular interest in the area and promised the President their continued support in his efforts to develop the region.

It is very pleasing to hear that this government is trying to develop our provincial areas which has long been neglected. However, I hope and all the people around the country that these promises could be achieve. Something to remember, development does not come with only road constructions, people also require health services, education, leisures and proper accomodation to strenghten our societies.
