Right on Track as Sierra Leone’s President Reaches out to Earthquake Victims in Haiti

President Koroma - Reaching Out To Haiti

The recent earthquake in Haiti that killed tens of thousands of people and left many more without shelter and food, have been responded to from around the world with unprecedented generosity. Assistance has come in different forms ranging from direct financial donations to medical , logistics and military assistance. The solidarity shown by Haiti’s friends around the world goes to show the regard the world has for the plight of its suffering people. From North America to Asia and from India to Israel the flood of assistance has been remarkable.

African leaders have shown amazing kindness by dipping into their somewhat economically tight budget to show support and stand by their brothers and sisters in Haiti. One such leader is the Sierra Leone President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma who happened to be one of the first African leaders to offer his country’s assistance and to make an immediate donation of $100,000 (one hundred thousand U.S. dollars) to the government and people of Haiti in this difficult of circumstances. This act of generosity only goes to show the character of a man who relentlessly work hard to improve on the standard of living of his people. And by extending the same human compassion to the people of Haiti it just adds to the credibility of an already noble public servant of the Sierra Leonean people.

Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and South Africa’s Jacob Zuma also made donations to Haiti. The emergence of a new breed of African leaders give hope to so many of us who have been disillusioned by the apparent lack of regard for events of this nature happening around the world by some of our leaders. Haitians are our brothers and sisters and historical ties between us are evident not only in their way of life but our common and shared beliefs. We are urging all African leaders across the continent to reach out in one way or another to assist Haitians in this their most desperate hour of need.
