Sekouba Konate Threatens to Resign As Mediation Talks in Burkina Faso Breaks Down

According to reports filtering through from Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Farso, talks between Guinea’s Leader Dadis Camara and his deputy, Sekouba Konate who is currently the Interim President, are said to have broken down. Konate has threatened to resign if Camara cannot compromise on terms for a transition to civilian rule. Camara’s allies in the junta who travelled as well to the Burkinabe capital are insisting that he returns to Guinea and assumes the presidency. It seems Sekouba Konate is trying to keep his commitment to the West to ensure Camara does not have any significant say in the transition process.
Burkinabe officials are trying to mediate a compromise, but Camara has been angered by being tricked into arriving at Ouagadougou when his intended destination after leaving Morocco was Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Hundreds of Guineans went on the Airport runway in Conakry threatening to block any flights from entering the country if Camara was not onboard. Dadis Camara has a broad based support amongst the minority tribes who sees themselves as having been alienated from Guinea’s political power and look up to Camara as a true representation of the minorities as he himself is from the north.
What is at stake is political turmoil in a country that has already suffered in the hands of dictators over the past three decades . Camara took over power in a bloodless coup after the death of former President Lansana Conté, promising to conduct free and fair elections that will see a democratic ushering of a civilian administration. But it seems the outcome of the already stalled talks in the Burkinabe capital will ultimately define the future of the already volatile situation in the West African country.
