GlaxoSmithKline Slashes Prices of Key Drugs For Africans
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) a leading international Pharmaceutical company has announced a 40 percent reduction for antibiotics prices in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Oral formulations of Augmentin would reduce by 40 percent while that of Zinnat would have a 30 percent fall. GSK Managing Director John Musunga said the move was to help in the fight against bacterial infection in east Africa.
Musungu further added the drop in prices will be effective this month and was as a result of pressure from medical practitioners and the governments in the region to bring the medical cost down. The two drugs represent a 50 percent turnover for the firm. GSK first reduced cost of its patented medicines in the region by more than half in April last year. The copyrighted drugs were reduced by between 60 and 80 percent. Patented medicines are those that GSK has exclusive global rights to manufacture and sell for atleast15 years before another company starts to formulate similar products. The organization is one of the leading research based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies worldwide.
